| Course Description | This course examines the central dogma of biology as both a molecular system and a scientific legacy. Rooted in the seminal works of Dr. Marie Maynard Daly, the first African American woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry, students will explore DNA, how it is read and regulated, and how it shapes the structure and function of every organism. Students will explore how changes to DNA lead to disease, or how, in the case of genetic engineering, errors are intentionally made to discover. From extracting DNA from fruits to visiting a NYC-based community biology laboratory, students will be fully immersed in the scientific process as Detectives of the Living World. |
