| Course Description | Why do some countries develop well-functioning states capable of providing security and public services to their citizens while others do not? Why do some develop a strong sense of national identity and unity, while others are plagued by ethnic and communal divisions? How do the structure and strength of the state shape the development of national and other identities, and how do those identities in turn shape the state? This course examines these and related questions from historical and comparative perspectives, drawing on cases from different world regions in both the past and the present. |
